History

The studios at Threshold were hand-built by owners James Walsh and AJ Maltese starting in 1996 when our facility was just a single rehearsal room in a building on 41st.  AJ and James were musicians playing in a band together and James was a carpenter. We built a studio to do our band’s record.  We've been building studios, playing, and producing music ever since.

As the facility footprint has expanded, the main recording studio was completed between 1997 and 1998 after the passing of rehearsal room friend and building co-tenant Jeff Buckley opened up the final adjoining space to the live room.  Our control room now occupies that same space in the facility.

Over the years, hundreds of great bands and thousands of musicians have come through the studio. One of our first clients was The Strokes and we have fortunately just kept moving forward from there seeing countless developing artists take their first shot here at the studio and reach for the stars. These days we have many repeat clients: friends, producers, and relationships that occupy the rooms on a daily basis or whenever they come back into town.

The expansion of the facility has grown to include recording studios, office suites, writing rooms and rehearsal rooms and now services including music production, artist development and management, college booking agency.  These endeavors keep us quite busy and in touch with some very long term, trusted relevant industry relationships that we engage on a regular basis to support our main clientele, which are more often than not artists in early stages of their career development.

These relationships come in quite handy when your passion is working with young artists who need trusted, proven relationships to help build out their teams and move their careers forward in a positive way.

The Control Room is an awesomely comfortable and great sounding room featuring a Protools HD system with, classic old school Trident 80B Console and Tannoy monitoring.  Our live room produces incredible drum sounds and provides for 3 independent spaces for isolation when tracking.  After basic tracking, the room switches over to an incredible overdub space with dozens of ways to alter the sound of the room and a great selection of microphones, amplifiers, instruments (including a grand piano).  Overdubbing is always a fun, productive time here at the studio.

For the last 4 years producer / engineer Jeremy Sklarsky has been honing his chops and now occupies the head engineer and “go to” producer seat in the studio.   Without any prodding or suggestions, almost every client or first time visitor to the rooms all seem to say the same thing after a few minutes - "this place has a great vibe"- verbatim, time after time...

We are very thankful for all the great friends we have made over the years and hope to continue to do what we do best long into the future.  The studio also works well for shooting video and has become a trusted go to place for indie artists and prominent MTV, AT&T and other corporate clients in need of  a cool looking studio to film in.

If you are an artist or band looking to move forward in your career - recording, production or additional artist development, please feel free to give us a call.  We provide hourly and block rates in our main studio that are quite reasonable and also provide all in production packages including studio, engineer and producer on a per song basis.  Ask for James Walsh @ 212.244.1871 or email thresholdstudiosnyc @ gmail.com
